I've been taking a break from the garden this week and putting my mind and energy into other things. Finally made my first West-coast bowdrill kit: western red cedar (Thuja plicata). I also had my first attempt at using cedar root as a natural bow cord. No coal yet, but perhaps I'm close... a few adjustments away I hope.
I've also sunk my hands back into brain-tanning. Wahoo! It's funny how much I miss it when I go long periods without working some skin. I gave Vita and Frog each a muskrat hide (Ondatra zibethicus) and am teaching them fur-on egg-tanning. I haven't used eggs much myself, so it's a good learning experience for me as well. My hands and mind have been so itching for projects lately... I didn't realize how absolutely obsessed I am with crafts until the last week or so. It's hard here because I'm lacking tools, materials, and personal space. Last night I lay in "bed" for 3 plus hours, skills to learn, ideas for crafts, projects to work, tools to buy, etc., etc., running/flying through my brain. I would periodically turn on my flashlight, jot down some notes, then lay back down, head still spinning. It was a really strange experience, but good. I feel like I finally released a lot of the mush that was beginning to traffic jam. In fact, here's some things I jotted down. If there's anything anyone knows how to do and would be interested in sharing/teaching their knowledge, let me know. Even good websites or classes... anything helps.
Skills I want to learn:
-Food storage--canning, dehydration, jerky, pickling, fermentation, etc.
-Saving seed--processing and storage
-Pottery--preparing the clay, primitive firing, glazes or coloration
-Knitting--more advanced stitches, patterns, etc.
-Natural dyes--especially for wool
-Natural soap making
-Butchering and filleting
-Woodworking/construction--specifically creating joints, pegs, etc. without use of metal
-Raising bees and harvesting honey/beeswax
-Tapping trees for syrup and sugar
Oh boy. Just thinking about it makes me sooooo excited. I know I'm going to be away from you all for a long while, but when I'm back you all best be ready to dive right in to all of this with me. :-) (AND MORE!)
What else... On Friday I'm meeting with the director of a children's nature camp for a possible job instructing one day a week. It would be really good to have at least some income while I'm here. Plus it's right up my alley. I've found it to be very fun finding similarities between skills and games even all the way across the country. So many of the same names, games, challenges, and crafts. Played foxtails in the field yesterday and I felt like I was right there out in front of Kiwanis.
While I'm thinking of it, for those of you interested in sending mail: letters, care packages, money, chocolate, etc... :-) my mailing address will be as follows:

It's a rainy one here today. I think only the third one since I've been here, actually. Haha. I know, I know... winter's coming. The.rain.is.coming. And I'm going now. Peace be with you all.
